With its Motorama-inspired styling and luxurious appointments, this 1955 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible is an imposing machine that exudes the opulence of GM's premier division. It is one of 3,950 produced that year and features the top-of-the-line, dual-quad version of the 331 CI V-8. It features two carburetors, correct batwing air cleaner and dual exhaust with through-valance exit. With a 9.0:1 compression ratio, this potent V-8 is rated at 270 HP at 4,800 RPM with 345 lb-ft of torque at 3,200. It's mated to a column- shifted automatic transmission. Other options include power steering, power brakes, a leather split bench-seat interior with button- tuck upholstery, power windows, Daytona weave carpet, Autronic eye, tinted windshield and the correct aluminum Sabre wheels wrapped in wide whitewall tires. Based on the Cadillac Series 62 platform, the Eldorado shared its front end sheet metal with its lesser siblings, which was characterized by partially frenched headlamps, a large rectangular-element grille, a massive chrome front bumper with pointed “Dagmars,” and a large V-shaped hood emblem, Cadillac crest and a winged hood ornament. Moving back, the Eldorado featured a nearly vertical wraparound windshield, tinted glass and chrome trim. It also featured unique rear end sheet metal specific to the Eldorado. It was a totally different look compared to the other 1955 Cadillacs, with bladed fins that housed small twin tail lamps on their sides and a unique vertical trim treatment at the tail, as well as the aforementioned valance-exiting exhaust tips. Eldorado convertibles also received a special ribbed trim applique at the beltline. Perched on a massive 129-inch wheelbase C-body chassis, the Eldorado's dimensions are formidable to say the least. The overall length is 223.2 inches (18.6 feet) with a track width of 60 inches in the front and 63 inches in the rear. With its larger-than-life styling, rarity and luxury appointments, this 1955 Cadillac Eldorado is a beautiful and desirable artifact from a bygone era. |
