Even at first glance, the 1958 Impala was a big change from the previous model. However, this was more than a simple retrofitting of its sheet metal, as the year also heralded changes in technology. This special convertible has benefited from a restoration done some years ago, but it remains in a state of excellent conditioning. As noted, the biggest transition for ‘58 was from the rounded high-cab Tri-Five design to a more sleek, low-profile shape. The grille and quad headlamp layout took on an almost mini-Cadillac-like flair, and the vertical tail fins were now angular with final trim that wrapped around the tail lamp arrangement. It would last only one model season.
Of course, the Impala also was noted for hosting Chevrolet’s first big-block engine. The 348 CI V-8 engine was the beginning of that legacy, here with a black round air cleaner and the trademark W-series cylinder heads. Red paint and air conditioning is part of the package, and there is a Powerglide automatic transmission behind the engine. Power steering and power brakes are also part of this car.
The exterior is stellar, covered in Aegean Aqua blue with premium Impala chrome trim. The power-operated white convertible top is matched by an aqua, gray and black tri-colored interior done in cloth and vinyl materials. This includes a split front bench seat, a pushbutton radio with dual outside angled antennas, in-dash clock, blue carpeting with rubber floor mats, the unique dash-mounted “traffic light viewer,” metallic dash facings and Impala model identification. Beyond the chrome edge and body trim, the exterior wears dual mirrors, fender skirts, ribbed lower rocker covers and model identification. This car rides on a set of steel wheels with full-size deluxe wheel covers and Chevrolet logo tri-point spinners, and the final touch would be the wide whitewall tires on all four corners. The styling of 1958 would be dropped again for 1959 as Chevrolet refined this model. This is a first-year big-block convertible that helped bring the legacy of Chevrolet performance.
